Roxy – A Tribute to a Good Girl

We are writing this blog with a heavy heart, over the Christmas Holidays we lost a family member and a best friend. On December 28 we had to say good-bye to Roxy, our family dog. After 13 wonderful years, her watch has ended.

When we picked up from the Humane Society in August of 2005, Roxy was an adorable 8 week old puppy. It was just over a month after Eryk and I were married, which made her one of the founding members of our family.

Anyone who’s ever met Roxy recognized her as having an amazing personality, she was calm and lovable, intelligent and fun. She was a great family dog right from the start. She was very intelligent and was easily trainable, but I always felt that she never really needed training per say because she just understood when we spoke to her. She was quiet indoors, but loved her walks, barge rides and being with the family. She was never a problem and always happily excepted what was given to her.

Everyone chose a favorite memory they wanted to share about Roxy. My favorite memory was how much she loved the snow. She especially loved when you kicked up snow into the air, and she would to try to snatch it out of the air, then bark at you saying “do it again… do it again”.

Tia loved when Roxy got the zoomies. When you took her on a walk it didn’t matter how old she got she would do a twirl and bark and look up at whoever was closest. Tia also loved how she’d make noises in her dreams and twitch her feet like she was running.

Eryk loved that Roxy would bark after he jumped in the lake at the cottage presumably to warn him of the danger or calling for help. This was a little habit that she reserved only for him. He would proudly state that he must be her favorite, because she only worried when he was in the water.

Owen liked how in her last month Roxy enjoyed the SUP rides with mommy and him. She was skittish at first but she quickly got used to it and was happy to jump on. More surprisingly she would even climb on to return to the boat, as there were usually waves lapping at the beach which made it difficult to hold the board steady for her, but she handled them like an old pro.

Hugh remembered all the favorite spots that she liked to hang out at. She was a guard dog at heart, so she chose spots she was able to watch the property from, like the front window of the house.

When I spoke to my mom on the phone, just after Roxy had passed, she reminisced about the time that my dad had taken Roxy for a walk and cross-country skiers had scared her and she ran off. After hours of searching for her, my dad finally returned home to find Roxy sitting on his front porch. What made this even more special, was that we lived only 5 minutes from my parents, but she knew she was walking with him and had left from his house, so that is where she returned to.

RIP and sweet dreams Roxy girl.

  1. Evan, Gemma, Dave and I send you our love – so hard to say goodbye to such a beautiful loving companion! Thank you so much for sharing your memories and photos.

  2. Roxy was truly was such a beautiful soul. When we brought a rambunctious Minou to live next door, she continued to come over and say ‘hi’ and was very gracious with her new neighbour. She was so fortunate to have a very loving family and travel so extensively. I am saddened to hear that she has passed and so sorry for your loss.

  3. I am so sorry for your loss, loosing our fur babies is very hard. We lost our big boy this year. He got to see the lake this summer but never the Caribbean yours was a lucky boy. Sending hugs to the family.💕😘 love j
